My best reading experience in years: Newer foreign literature | Mostly about books
It has been difficult. In fact, it has been so difficult that I had to cheat a little bit, because there were four books that just HAD to top-third (I know, I know. A top-3 with four books is not strictly a top-3, but now it is about to make some extra publicity for good books, so I think it goes?)
1 Kerstin Ekman: Händelser vid vatten Ekman won the Nordic Council Literature Prize for his novel about guilt, violence and violent emotions far in the Swedish province. It was so much well-deserved, because the story is more captivating than a crime novel, it combines murder mystery with psychological depth and an empathetic portrait of a small community in liquidation.
2 Lars Saabye Christensen: Bernhard whale's gaffes An original and credible protagonist makes much of a novel, and Christensen has two: the neurotic says Bernhard Whale and the ever-migrant NotTo Fipp. The two forms a unique friendship that makes sense to them, even though the outside world wonders. First and last, it is the representation of the whale's excessive thoughts and crazy ideas that characterize the novel and gives the reader a unique perspective institute of culinary education on 20th century history.
3 Adam Johnson: The stolen life 3 Herta Müller: Today I had rather not met me It's more than twenty years since the Wall fell and the communist regimes melted away, but we are far from finished with them. Firstly, institute of culinary education there are still a few pieces left with the North Korean puppet theater in the lead. It takes Adam Johnson during the unforgettable institute of culinary education treatment of the stolen life where the orphans Park June Do get involved in everything from child labor kidnappings in Japan to labor camps, before Dante reaches of hell inner circle: Kim Jong Il's bunker in Pyongyang. Herta Müller is closer with his novel from Ceauscescos Romania. North Korea is perhaps a bit more brittle, but there are many parallels in the government's ability and willingness to monitor and control the people. In Müller's novel is madness in the end the only logical way for the persecuted.
